Campus Notification System

The UC Santa Cruz Campus Notification System is used to quickly communicate information to students, faculty and staff during a variety of situations that arise including emergencies and impactful events.

Campus Notification System Registration

To register or update your information for the UC Santa Cruz Campus Notification System:

  • Log in to CruzID Manager with your CruzID and Gold password https://cruzid.ucsc.edu.
  • Select Campus Notifications.
  • Enter your cell phone number and additional relevant information.
  • Click Update.
Instructions can be found at https://its.ucsc.edu/get-help/cruzalert.html.

Communication to Expect

CruzAlerts (Emergency Notifications)

As soon as a significant emergency or dangerous situation on campus that involves an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees is confirmed, the UCSC campus community (or segments of the community) is notified through CruzAlert.  Voice messages will go out to all telephones, text and voice messages to cell phones, and email to all CruzMail and other registered accounts.

Everyone in the UC Santa Cruz community is automatically enrolled to receive Clery Act-related alerts through their UCSC email.  CruzAlerts are reserved for emergency notifications, including incidents such as immediate life safety concerns, terrorist and bomb threats, or an active shooter.

SlugSafe (Non-Emergency / Campus Impact Notification)

SlugSafe messages do not require immediate action and are used for safety and operational impact(s) or advisement actions.  These messages will include information about situations such as safety outreach, traffic conditions, non-severe weather events, and infrastructure outages.

Communication Methods

Cell Phone and Text Messaging

Due to the mobile nature of many campus affiliates, cell phones are often the best way to reach the campus population during an emergency. Campus public safety officials will generally send both voice calls and text messages to registered cell phone numbers to ensure delivery and comprehension of the message.

Please note that if you register a cell phone number in a non-cell phone field in the sign-up system (for example, listing your cell phone as your "home phone" number) it will not receive text messages. This is because the Campus Notification System has no way of telling whether a number is a cell phone or not unless it is listed as such. If you have multiple cell phones, we recommend listing the one you carry most frequently on campus in the appropriate cell phone field.

Landline Phones

Landline phones can include campus extensions, home phone numbers or other numbers you can be reached at. Depending on the nature of the emergency, we may use some or all of these contact numbers. For example, an emergency occurring prior to the morning commute time may require contacting home phone numbers to inform you of the situation, while campus extensions may be a better option for emergencies occurring later in the day.

Email

Campus email addresses are automatically loaded into the Campus Notification System for all faculty, staff, and active students. While email is not as immediate a means of communicating during an emergency, we will always send an email notification out as well. The primary reason for doing so is that we can often provide more information in an email than in a phone or text message. Additionally, some campus affiliates may notice an email more quickly than a phone call in certain circumstances.

Your UCSC email address is the address that will be used for Campus Notifications. While the system does provide an option to register additional email addresses, these are only used in rare circumstances

Communication to the Larger Community

In addition to the personal contact methods listed above, other emergency notification means, including to the larger surrounding community and other interested members of the public, may include:

The larger surrounding community and other interested members of the public may sign up to receive alerts about operational impact, advisory, and emergency information.  They can tailor the types of methods they wish to receive by enrolling in event subscriptions through UCSC's Nixle Alerts.
