Beach Hazard Statement information from the National Weather Service issued February 16th, 2022.

Citing dangerous rip currents and unexpectedly large “sneaker” waves on area shorelines, the National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement for both the Monterey and San Francisco bay areas.

The hazardous conditions are expected to go from 2 p.m. today to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Offshore winds are expected to bring nice weather to the beaches, according to the National Weather Service. The ocean may appear calm but high energy long period swells will have the power to pull unsuspecting beach goers into the ocean.

Beach visitors are urged to stay off coastal jetties, pay close attention to their children and pets, and never turn their back to the ocean when they’re near the water.

The National Weather Service has more information available on its website and on Twitter, and offers tips for how to be safe at the beach. The California Surf Lifesaving Association also has ocean safety information.
